Participa City

Join the Participa‑City Train‑the‑Trainer Course: Become a Facilitator for Inclusive, Anti‑Racist Learning

Across Europe, cities are becoming more diverse — and with that diversity comes both opportunity and responsibility. The Participa‑City project supports professionals who work with communities, schools, youth groups, and public institutions to address racism and discrimination in meaningful, practical ways. One of the project’s core tools is the Participa‑City simulation game: an immersive, role‑play‑based learning experience that helps participants understand discrimination as a systemic, intersectional phenomenon and reflect on their own role in creating more inclusive societies.

To ensure this tool reaches communities effectively, we are launching the Participa‑City Train‑the‑Trainer Course — a comprehensive learning programme designed to equip trainers, educators, and facilitators with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to deliver the game in their own organisations.

Why This Training?

Racism and discrimination are complex, deeply rooted issues. Facilitating conversations around them requires sensitivity, structure, and strong pedagogical grounding. The Participa‑City curriculum is designed to develop trainers who are “critically aware, reflective, and ethically grounded facilitators of anti‑racism learning processes.”

By joining this course, you will:

  • Strengthen your conceptual understanding of racism, discrimination, privilege, and intersectionality
  • Learn to facilitate emotionally sensitive discussions with confidence
  • Gain hands‑on experience with the Participa‑City simulation game
  • Develop skills in conflict management, debriefing, and inclusive communication
  • Learn to adapt the game to different audiences and institutional contexts
  • Become part of a European network of trainers committed to social justice and civic participation

Training Structure

The course is delivered in three interconnected phases, combining online preparation, immersive face‑to‑face learning, and guided follow‑up support.

  1. Online Introduction — Building Critical Awareness: This phase establishes a shared conceptual foundation. Trainers explore key concepts such as implicit bias, structural inequality, and microaggressions, and engage in reflective activities. They also learn the basics of role‑play methodology and its relevance to anti‑racism education.
  2. Face‑to‑Face Training — Experiential Learning & Facilitation Skills: Over two full days, participants immerse themselves in the Participa‑City simulation game, experiencing it first as players and then analysing it as future facilitators.
  3. Follow‑Up Online Session — Transfer to Professional Practice: In the final phase, trainers design their own training sessions using the Participa‑City methodology. They refine scenarios, plan logistics, and receive peer feeback.
